Butter tarts combine the only ingredients necessary for perfect cooking: sugar, butter, eggs, and flour. These include walnuts; others might substitute raisins or pecans.
That reminds me, I need to hit up that bakery where you guys used to go for butter tarts when we worked at King/Spadina, and pick up some of those awesome caramel tarts, or whatever that alternate was that I used to get :)
